Hi, Mom & Dad!

Mom & Dad visited Dallas this past weekend and I was so caught up in our fun plans that I neglected to post a Week & End recap on Friday – whoops! I guess that shows that I’m really taking this post to heart and keeping my focus on life’s sweet moments instead of being distracted by life’s list of to-dos. We had so, so much fun spending time together and, clearly, as this photo suggests, we spent a lot of time enjoying one of our favorite mutual hobbies – eating! I can’t wait to post a recap soon, so stay tuned…

Summery Pins

I’ve found so much good summer-inspired content on Pinterest over the last few weeks and I thought I’d share some of my favorite images with you today. Don’t these photos make you wish you were sipping an ice-cold beverage near a beautiful body of water? #metoo

Attic-Turned-Lounge

Blogs are wonderful for so many reasons but the one that tops my list is that they are a great resource in helping me find creative, inspiring, and unique ways to furnish and outfit my house. Lately I’ve been drawn to Scandinavian-styled homes – lots of white walls with clean, minimalist pieces and accents in the form of pops of color and fresh, bright plants. My friend, Natalie, summed up how I feel just perfectly in her home tour on The Everygirl a few months ago:

I like working with a blank canvas of white walls and have been drawn to more neutral and minimalistic decor lately. I also appreciate what a statement piece of furniture, a colorful area rug, or thoughtfully placed houseplant can do for a space.

It’s like she read my mind! So naturally I fell in love the space that Naomi Stein designed as part of her self-proclaimed One Room Challenge: this gorgeous attic-turned-lounge. The space encompasses everything I gravitate towards – white walls, natural and neutral pieces, pops of color in thoughtfully curated nooks and crannies, and, of course, great plants. I would hang out there all day if I was Naomi, and I hope I can recreate a space like hers for myself one day (when I sent the link to James, he loved the transformation and said I’d definitely need to do it in the future, and also added that his dream space is a perfectly organized garage, outfitted with all sorts of tools and toys…to each his own). Take a gander at all of the gorgeous photos that Naomi posted on her blog – aren’t they fantastic?

Wedding Photos

In honor of hitting the two month mark of wedded bliss tomorrow (eep!), here are some of my very favorite wedding photos. It was so hard to choose just a few (okay, more than a few) out of the hundreds of gorgeous images that Heather took, but these are certainly some pictures that are going to find their way into frames very soon…

Wedding Video

There are not enough words in the English language to describe how much we love the insanely perfect wedding video that our talented friend & videographer, Patrick Cone, shot and created for us. He captured our wedding day (and the events leading up to it, including our proposal) in a way only a genius/close friend can – it’s like Patrick read our minds and snagged footage of all of our favorite moments. Enjoy this beautiful piece – I promise that it will make you laugh & cry! Thank you, Patrick, for blessing us with this incredible keepsake!

Calligraphy Brunch

It’s Monday once again, but don’t despair – this time next week we’ll be celebrating Memorial Day, wahoo!

Yesterday I got to take a fantastic workshop: a Calligraphy Brunch with the über talented Lauren Essl. The workshop, hosted by Fullosophie, was held at Chicken Scratch + The Foundry, a restaurant & bar that I love for its amazing outdoor space, super cool decor, and beyond delicious chicken dishes. There was a group of 15 women ready to learn calligraphy, and we kicked off the class with salads, bottomless mimosas, and supremely tasty chicken and waffles.

The weather was absolutely perfect so we started class outdoors, munching on our brunches on picnic tables while we learned the basics of calligraphy from Lauren. After a brief and helpful overview, we got set up inside The Foundry, the bar area of the space, and got to work with our pens, nibs, and lettering samples. Lauren was such a good teacher – informative, encouraging, and helpful. She answered individual questions quickly and kindly, and she made her rounds at the table, pausing for each person to show us samples of her lettering, all the way through the alphabet (yep, from A to Z). She made us adorable packets of take-home goodies, including a personalized notebook, a fun pink pen, washi tape, ink, extra nibs for our calligraphy pens, and a pretty notecard with a bright, fun envelope.

Calligraphy is a whole lot harder than it looks – although, actually, I never thought it looked easy in the first place. Everything from the way you hold the pen to how much pressure you put on the nib is calculated precisely, and it took me awhile to get a handle on this new way of writing. In spite of the challenge, I found that calligraphy is really fun and it’s sort of relaxing in a way – it’s almost like it’s therapeutic. Anyway, I can’t wait to continue practicing so that someday I can address letters and make my own notecards and such – don’t you think it would be cute to have a large XO on a notecard, something similar to what I was working on below?

If you ever have the opportunity to take one of Lauren Essl’s workshops, I highly recommend that you sign up immediately – not only are they fun and interesting but they also sell out in a heartbeat. I learned so much and had an absolute blast, and Lauren was a fabulous teacher. Fullosophie did a great job hosting the brunch, too! It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Wedding Florals

rachelandjames 0216

One of the elements that I was most excited about planning for our wedding was the flowers. I was thrilled to get to work with the über talented Nouveau Romantics (who style all of the florals for one of my favorite bloggers, Camille Styles – check out their studio tour featured here), which is why I nearly fainted when they sent me the floral proposal for our wedding. They knew that I wanted to incorporate succulents, ranunculus, and trailing greenery into the overall scheme of things, so they took that inspiration and ran with it. They sent me the most elaborate, beautifully laid out document that highlighted all of the flowers they wanted to use on our special day, ranging from posies and garden roses to sweet peas and herbs. I was blown away by how much I loved their selections; it was like they had read my mind. The florals turned out so perfectly – I can’t even really begin to describe how much I loved the outcome. My favorite arrangements were my bridal bouquet, my flower crown, and Callie’s flower collar. In fact, on our honeymoon I told James that I wished I could still a) be wearing my wedding dress and b) be carrying my gorgeous bridal bouquet around with me. Le sigh.

Enjoy some photos of our wedding florals from the fabulous Heather Hawkins, as well as a peek at the floral design proposal that we used to make our selections!

Plant Panache

Plant Panache

Happy Monday! How was your weekend? Ours was filled with lots of outdoorsy goodness, especially because we’ve outfitted our backyard with zero-gravity reclining chairs (heavenly for reading and sunbathing) and a spankin’ new grill. Coupled with our twinkle lights and Tiki torches, we now feel like we have a little oasis in our backyard, and we love it.

Last month I got to write another piece for Bungalow Magazine, the beautifully designed and curated online quarterly about home decor in Texas. I wrote my third and favorite piece to date about how to use house plants to decorate your space, and I got to interview the talented and creative Brianne Denton, co-owner of the Dallas-based floral studio Blue Lotus. Heather shot the gorgeous images for the story, making it an all-around blast of a collaboration.

Head over to Bungalow to check out the piece (on pages 105 – 113). Even though I pride myself on maintaining a green thumb when it comes to my beloved succulents, I learned so much about using different kinds of house plants (like pencil cacti and bromeliads) to really bring the outdoors in. Bri gave some fantastic recommendations about surprising and beautiful containers to use, and she shares some good tips for keeping your plants alive. I especially love this quote from her, as it totally encapsulates the vibe I’m trying to create in our home: “I’ve made little vignettes around my house using plants. Putting a living plant in every nook of the house is inspiring.”

Happy reading!

Wedding Decor

Table Place Setting

It’s been just over three weeks since James and I got married at Le San Michele in Buda, Texas, and I know that we can both confidently say that we had the wedding of our dreams. I want to keep reliving that beautiful day so each week I’m going to share snippets of our wedding, featuring different aspects of our gorgeous celebrations as time progresses. To start, let’s talk about decor. Our wedding was the perfect mix of so many of our favorite elements – the outdoors in general, certainly, but specifically European gardens, ranch life, Texas foliage, and starry skies. Our planners, Liz and Hannah of The Nouveau Romantics, helped us make our visions become a reality. Something we loved about them is that they are a one-stop wedding shop – they do in-house floral arrangements and paper design/production in addition to event planning, ensuring that everything about our special day was unified and seamless.

I spent many hours creating a Pinterest board with Liz and Hannah, which served as a visual bulletin board to guide as we chose linens and farm tables and lighting set-ups and floral arrangements, and then, later, over the phone, that helped us navigate our options regarding the beverages to serve at cocktail hour and the number of waiters to have during our family-style dinner service. We picked out china and vases and napkins and flatware, selecting everything carefully and thoughtfully. And I loved every single minute of it. It turned out so beautifully that as my family, bridesmaids, and I pulled up to the wedding venue on April 13th, I started crying at the sight of the perfectly-planned spot where James and I would become man and wife. It was all so overwhelming and special!

Heather Hawkins, our incredibly talented friend and photographer, captured so many gorgeous images that highlight the decor decisions we made for our wedding. I have so many more pictures of hers to share, so future posts will come on florals and getting ready with girlfriends and, of course, the wedding itself, but for now, take a peek at how our wedding day decor turned out. I love these photos more than I can say!

P.S. Here’s a romantic sneak peek of James & me…more to come soon!
