404 Kitchen

404 Kitchen

While I was in Nashville last week, I enjoyed so many tasty treats at so many delicious places – crispy brussels sprouts with apples and bacon vinaigrette at Silo, pork tacos with yogurt dill sauce at Mas Tacos Por Favor, bourbon vanilla lattes and homemade Pop-Tarts at Barista Parlor, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice and coffee at Pinewood Social, sweet cream biscuits & peach jam ice cream at Jeni’s, sweet potato buttermilk pie at Husk, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese & pepper jelly at the Oak Bar, and barbecued brisket sandwiches at Edley’s. Nashville is a southern epicenter of good food, that’s for sure. If forced to choose a favorite, though, I would have to select 404 Kitchen, the tiny restaurant nestled in the corner of an even tinier hotel.

Becca had to make reservations two weeks in advance and we were still only able to score a table at 5:15 p.m. This speaks both to 404 Kitchen’s popularity and to its very small, intimate size. The space, though small, is beautiful, complete with plenty of natural light and a picturesque bar. We settled into our teeny table and began poring over the menu. We already knew that we wanted to start with the burrata cheese, which was served alongside the most diverse and delicious accompaniments that I have ever seen. The cheese was laid delicately over salty anasazi beans, crispy brussels sprouts slaw, and a piece of corn pone, the latter of which I can only describe as cornbread’s saltier, more flavorful cousin. It was intensely delicious. We each drank a glass of the best chardonnay we’ve ever had while deciding what to enjoy as our entrees. I settled on the tri-tip, and it was perfection. The meat was seasoned wonderfully and it was complemented by a tasty mustard green pesto. But the show-stopper was the side of farroto served alongside the tri-tip. This dish is 404’s take on risotto, substituting the common arborio rice with farro, a longer, heartier grain. It was creamy and rich and flavorful and studded with hazelnuts and dried cherries. It was, in a word, heavenly.

For dessert, we enjoyed more wine and a deconstructed apple pie, a caramel-y, rich, autumnal treat that rounded out the meal so well. The whole dining experience was exploding with flavor. If you find yourself in Nashville soon, see if you can snag a reservation at 404 Kithen – and if you can, consider ordering an extra helping of farroto along with your meal.

Six Months

Six Months

Today is our six month wedding anniversary! How did that happen?! I feel like our beautiful ceremony and reception were just yesterday. I wish I could teleport back to April 13th, reliving every single glorious moment of our sweet day. I was thinking about our vows, the words that we wrote for one another and said aloud in front of the people we love most, and I thought I would share them here with you today. We worked hard to craft these vows, cobbling them together from our thoughts and prayers and dreams as well as from inspiration found in the Bible, in books, and in beautiful wedding ceremonies. I absolutely love how they turned out – they perfectly encapsulate our spirit both as individuals and as a couple. I get all teary just typing them!

“On this day, I give you my heart, and with it, these promises:

I promise to love you for the rest of my life, following Christ in the journey He’s set out before us.

I promise to dream with you, to challenge you, to travel with you, and to grow with you.

I promise to serve you wholeheartedly, and walk beside you through whatever our lives may bring.

I will be yours in plenty and in want, in sickness and in health, in failure and in triumph.

I promise to be your partner in parenthood, your ally in conflict, your comrade in adventure, your consolation in disappointment, your accountability in darkness, and your accomplice in mischief.

‘Where you go, I will go. And where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.’

You are my person – my love and my life, today and always.”

The Harvest

Tonight is a highly anticipated evening – the harvest. Last fall I wrote in detail about the harvest, an annual gathering that Korena, Laura, and I have as we gather around the table, welcome autumn, share a delicious meal (which always includes tasty appetizers, a robust salad, Korena’s incredible roast, and something sweet for dessert), drink good wine, and spend time together. It’s funny – even though the three of us frequently get to do fun things together together, whether as a trio or as a group at Girls Night In or with our manfriends, there’s something so special and sacred about celebrating the harvest together. This evening will mark our fourth year (count ’em, four years!) of enjoying the harvest, and I absolutely cannot wait.

I have to borrow some words I wrote last year about our special evening to close out this post because I think they perfectly encapsulate how I feel about our sweet tradition:

So tonight we’ll meet for the harvest – we’ll talk and laugh while enjoying a juicy roast, the namesake salad, and champagne, all around Korena’s table. As I wrote in an e-mail the day after the first harvest, it is a gathering of ladies, a “woman’s night in: a harvest of blessings, a feast prepared by hunters and gatherers.” (I might have gotten slightly carried away there, but you get the point.) It is a reminder of how our friendships have grown, how our lives have changed, how our dreams have been realized, and how dang lovely it is to have a night in together around the table.

To the harvest!

Swiss Avenue Historic District

Swiss Avenue

I’m back from Nashville and I have so much goodness to share from my time in Tennessee! But first, it’s back to the grind. Actually, I’m super excited to be back at work in Dallas because I’m enrolled in a really interesting grant writing workshop at the Center for Nonprofit Management. I’ll share some of the input that I learned here on the blog next week!

The Center for Nonprofit Management is located in a sweet little oasis tucked away in Deep Ellum. Though this hip neighborhood is known to be more on the industrial, up-and-coming end of the neighborhood spectrum, the Center is located in a nook with a different vibe – on Swiss Avenue, a historically beautiful tree-lined street that is home to a host of gorgeously restored homes. The best part? Thanks to The Meadows Foundation, these beautifully maintained properties are now where many local non-profit organizations are based. Is that a sweet deal or what? Now I’m dreaming of Touch A Life having an office space in this pretty part of town…

Weekend Trip

Nashville

I’m so sorry for not sharing a Week & End post on Friday but time got the best of me! I’m in Nashville for work (and play – I get to stay with one of my very best friends, Becca, who is the best tour guide) and I’m loving every moment in this sweet southern city. I head back to Dallas tomorrow and I promise to share a great recap of this Tennessee gem soon.

Happy Monday!

Katy Perry Concert

In a few short hours, Kyla, Lauren, Kristen, and I will be dancing our booties off at the Katy Perry concert! Mom and I went to her California Dreams tour in Dallas in July of 2011 and she was an incredible live performer – we loved the show. I am so excited to see her in concert again!

An aside – if you haven’t checked out Part of Me, the documentary about Katy Perry (which was filmed during the aforementioned California Girls tour that Mom and I attended), you absolutely must. It is so interesting and entertaining, and it reveals a lot about Katy’s true heart, which is so pure. She is a genuine and talented artist who loves her career but puts her people first. After I made James watch it with me, who is more of a rock fan than a Top 40 kind of guy, even he admitted that it was great. So if you can’t see Katy in concert, check her out on Netflix!

Flower Crown

rachelandjamesEP010

Exactly one year ago today James and I were got all gussied up to take our engagement photos with our stunning friend and talented wedding photographer, Heather Hawkins. I was so excited about what Heather had in store for us at the shoot, and, as I had anticipated, the evening turned out absolutely perfectly, as did the photos. Our shoot goes down in history as one of my most favorite memories with James (and with Heather!), and I love that we have gorgeous pictures to document that special night.

One of my favorite elements from the shoot was the flower crown that I wore, created by the talented floral designers at Bows + Arrows. It made me feel ethereal and beautiful, and I wished I could wear it every single day. Thanks to the way the flower crown made me feel during our engagement photo session, I decided to wear another floral crown during our wedding reception (this one crafted by the Nouveau Romantics), and I am so grateful that I did – once again, it felt like the most perfect accessory to wear to complement my overall look.

In case you were wondering, I will be taking advantage of every future opportunity that affords me the chance to wear another flower crown – don’t say I didn’t warn you. In the meantime, enjoy some of my favorite engagement photos from our shoot last October that showcase that gorgeous flower crown.
